CBD for Pain Relief

More and more people are turning to Cannabidiol (CBD) for pain relief. CBD is one of many compounds found in hemp. It is important to note that CBD products do not contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the compound responsible for making you high when you use marijuana.

People suffering from chronic pain are opting for CBD products as a natural alternative to conventional medicines which often have side effects including dependency. There are a few types of chronic pain that CBD oil has been found to alleviate. This includes back pain, migraines, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Osteoarthritis and Neuropathic pain.

Numerous studies have shown that CBD has medicinal properties. Researchers are still working to determine how exactly CBD oil reduces pain in the body. Some studies point to CBD affecting the endocannabinoid system which influences how human beings perceive pain, pleasure, and memories. However, the evidence into the use of CBD for pain relief has mostly been gathered from animal-based studies.

According to a report published last year by the Pediatric Dermatology, CBD oil has the ability to heal blisters and wounds very fast. The research included children whose parents were involved. The parents applied CBD oil spray, cream, and oil on their children suffering from epidermolysis bullosa, a rare skin condition that causes blisters. After the application by the parents, it was reported that the children got healed faster than usual; the blisters and pain saw dramatic improvement.

In 2018, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews published a study about the use of cannabis-based medicines for the treatment of chronic neuropathic pain. People who have diabetes and multiple sclerosis suffer from chronic neuropathic pain. The study found that cannabis had properties that would be beneficial to the people suffering from neuropathic pain.

The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews went through about 16 other published studies about different cannabis medicines meant for treating chronic neuropathic pain. This study found that cannabis-based medication could help in the reduction of pain. It could also be of assistance to people who have difficulty sleeping and those who have other psychological illnesses. However, the study also found that there are some side effects to using cannabis medicines.

Despite numerous studies into the medicinal benefits of CBD, health officials are still concerned about the possible side effects. Investigations into the possible side effects of CBD oil are very limited. Many of the problems with the research into side effects stem from government prohibitions regarding CBD products.

According to the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, cannabis-based medicines could have side effects which include; mental confusion, and sleepiness. Other common side effects include diarrhea, tiredness, and losses of appetite.

Epidiolex, the only CBD drug which the FDA approved for epilepsy, is said to have some side effects. Long-term usage of Epidiolex is reported to lead to somnolence, diarrhea, decreased appetite, malaise, fatigue, sleeping problems, and weakness.

According to some reports, taking high notes of CBD is likely to cause muscle movement and tremors in people who have Parkinson’s disease.

CBD oils may also have interactions with other medications such as clozapine, chlorzoxazone, progesterone, and theophylline. What’s more, CBD oils could have adverse effects when used with sedative medications such as morphine, fentanyl, phenobarbital, and benzodiazepines.

Despite the possible side effects, people suffering from chronic pain have found relief by using CBD products. Before using CBD oil for chronic pain, it is essential that you talk to your doctor about it.
